Some Gay Books You Need To Read This Pride Month!! ft. some lgbtqiap+ books on my TBR

Hey, all it’s Ruby here from Ruby Rae Reads coming at you with my first post for Pink Blots. And I thought what better way to kick this off than with a recommendations post since it’s Pride Month yay!!

I did want to give you some LGBTQIAP+ recommendations but then I realised that I haven’t read that many (which obviously needs to change asap) so I figured some gay books would still give you all the love you needed. So let’s just get into it.

Okay so first up we have… Harry Potter.

*frog creeks*

Yeah I know I’m the worst and just really wanted to make that joke. Trust me, we’re not here to talk about Dumbledore and JK Rowling. Back to the regularly scheduled post.

Heartstopper (Volume 1) by Alice Oseman

79d2feed148694a13dbccad981834d3e

Oh my gosh so if you haven’t heard of this book, well it’s a graphic novel, but you will be in for a treat. This book is the most adorable thing I’ve ever read and I was just smiling the entire time. Alice has such a cute art style and I just loved this book so much. It’s just about these smol gay guys at a private school you start out as friends and then they both sort of realise they’re into each other. And it’s just so pure?? My hearts MELTS. I highly recommend, especially if you are a graphic novel newbie like me, it’s really easy to follow and it’s just so freaking adorable. I cannot even deal with the cuteness and wholesomeness.

What If It’s Us by Becky Albertalli & Adam Silvera

ABD9FCA4-8A4D-4EA8-9798-E5A92127AAD7

This is another super adorable (you’ll notice a trend) book that I really loved. If you didn’t know Becky and Adam are known for their gay stories. I haven’t read any of Adam’s solo works yet but I really want to and Becky is just the greatest. Anyways, they came together and wrote this book and it’s just so fun. If you’re a fan of rom-coms like I am then you’ll love this one. It’s about these two boys who meet at the post office in NYC, really like each other but don’t get each other’s contact details. But they can’t stop thinking about each other so land up trying to track each other down. I’m the worst at trying to quickly sum up books but I hope that made at least some sense. Anyways it’s really about trying to make love work, there’s fan culture and tons of diversity. And it’s just so good. I was smiling the entire time and I loved our main characters, Arthur and Ben.

Simon vs The Homosapiens Agenda and The Upside of Unrequited by Becky Albertalli

IMG_3012

Speaking of Becky Albertalli, I, of course, couldn’t recommend you gay books without mentioning Simon. Assuming you have never heard of this one (where have you been? Come out from under that rock please!), well it’s about a closeted gay teen named Simon who starts anonymously emailing another boy at school who is also gay. But then someone reads the emails and blackmails Simon, chaos then ensues from there. It’s brilliant. The movie is spectacular as well. We have great and loveable characters and it’s just so good. Please read it if you haven’t because I assure you it’s worth the hype.

But I also wanted to recommend her second book because I think that one’s a little more underrated than Simon. The main relationship of this book isn’t gay but the main character has gay moms and her sister is also lesbian. Therefore it plays a very large role in this book. It’s super cute and I found the main character Molly very relatable. Highly recommend these two!! I haven’t read it yet but Becky’s third book Leah On The Offbeat has a bisexual main character.

Carry On by Rainbow Rowell

I mean I couldn’t talk about gay books without mentioning my child. If you haven’t heard about me talking about this book (I talk about it nonstop so um…), well I adore it. I literally think about it all the time and has taken over my entire heart, being and soul. It’s sort of like a play, almost satire, on the Drarry ship (Draco/Harry from Harry Potter) and it’s truly magnificent. The magic system is lowkey hilarious and it warms my whole heart. Rainbow’s writing style is one of my favourites. I’m literally forcing everyone to read it. The relationship between Simon and Baz is just my favourite and I love them to pieces. The name might sound familiar because you know that fanfic Cath was writing in Fangirl? This is sort of Rainbow’s take on Cath’s fanfiction. The sequel is coming out in a few months and I am literally DYING to read it. I am so so so excited you have no idea. Anyways, I highly highly highly recommend this one so you to join the club of heartache and also adoration at the same time.

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid

Processed with VSCO with a6 preset

So you have most likely heard about this book because it’s EVERYWHERE. You would truly be under a rock if you haven’t seen this somewhere. This one is adult fiction which I don’t read a ton of but I couldn’t not add it to this list. And I hope you’re not sick of hearing about it just yet because I’m obviously here to recommend it. This was one of my more recent reads because it took me forever to get to it. And it was SPECTACULAR. It’s about this, not a very well-known journalist who’s asked to come and interview one of the biggest Hollywood stars of the 1960s called Evelyn Hugo, who hasn’t done an interview in decades. She was a sort of Marilyn Monroe type figure and you basically just learn her entire life story, why she had seven husbands and who was her actual true love was. And it’s really as brilliant as everyone has been saying. Evelyn is a very flawed character, they all are, but Taylor just writes them all in such a realistic way. Evelyn truly feels like an actual human being, that’s how well she was written. She’s bisexual, and there’s also a lesbian and gay character. And it’s so freaking amazing and if you were like me, on the fence about it, just read it. You won’t regret it. It really is that good.

Those are all my recommendations for today. I hope I’ve inspired you to pick up some of these books because I love them all and would love to know if you do too. I thought I would also share some LGBTQIAP+ books that are on my TBR too because as I mentioned earlier I really want to read more. I actually have a whole post with some I did last year this time if you’d like to check that out you can click right here. As you can see I’ve added a couple more 🙂
